The Team visits Teignmouth to Beach Clean

The South West Procurement Alliance (SWPA) organised a beach clean on the shores of Teignmouth in Devon, back in October last year, in conjunction with the Surfers Against Sewage initiative, the Million Mile Clean. This programme has been set up to combat the litter and plastic pollution which is sadly left by visitors or washes up on our beaches, from other places.

On the 24th of October last year, the SWPA team took time out of their working schedules to take to the beaches of Teignmouth, in order to remove any and all rubbish, litter and plastic from these local Devonshire shores. Not only was this effort, in an attempt to make the beaches cleaner, safer and better for the environment, but it also provided a great chance to get involved within this Devon community and created an opportunity to hear from the local community, as well.

The SWPA team are passionate about supporting the local communities and positively impact the South West, its causes, charities, and communities. This time it was by taking action and conducting a beach clean, helping keep litter off the beaches and adding to the sustainability of coastal towns like these, and their ecosystems. The SWPA team took their inspiration from the Surfers Against Sewage, a UK based marine conservation and campaigning charity which has been run for the last 30 years.

Surfers Against Sewage began the initiative, namely The Million Mile Clean, where everyone and anyone can get involved in the cleaning up, of not only the UK coastal towns and beaches, but everywhere from the streets to mountain tops as well. The initiative is set to run every year up until 2030. For more information and to see how you can get involved, and improve your local town or beaches, and help the sustainability and quality of your environment, check out their website here.

Being situated locally to Exeter, The Million Mile Beach Clean initiative, in conjunction with Surfers Against Sewage, is something team SWPA were keen to try their hand at. Not only did they clean up the beaches of Teignmouth, they also took a break from the office for some much needed fresh air and spoke to members of the local community on their route from the Back Beach through to Teignmouth Beach. The Beach Clean was successful and is something SWPA hope to implement on a more regular basis.
