Sounding Out Connection: Transforming Wellbeing in Bodmin

SWPA joins with IntoBodmin and Partners in Cornwall to utilise the SWPA Community Benefit Fund

Partnership: IntoBodmin, SWPA and our Partners in Cornwall

Location: Bodmin

Project Overview:

Through the SWPA Community Benefit Fund, our Partners in Cornwall and SWPA joined together to award funding to support intoBodmin with the installation of two solar-powered Echo Point sound posts in Bodmin town centre. This innovative project introduces calming, reflective “pause points” within a busy public space, designed to enhance wellbeing and create meaningful moments of connection.

The Echo Points feature locally sourced soundscapes, celebrating the voices, stories and natural environment of Bodmin. By combining technology, creativity and community input, the project transforms everyday spaces into places for reflection, interaction and belonging.

Creating Social Value:

At the heart of the project is community co-creation. Local residents were actively involved in sound-gathering workshops, contributing recordings that reflect Bodmin’s identity, heritage and environment. This inclusive approach ensures that the installation is not only for the community but shaped by it.

The project delivers social value by:

  • Providing accessible, non-clinical wellbeing interventions in a public setting.
  • Encouraging participation from diverse groups through creative engagement activities.
  • Enhancing public spaces in a way that is sustainable, with solar-powered infrastructure.
  • Embedding local identity into the experience through community-generated sound content.

Launch events and ongoing engagement activities have further strengthened local participation, ensuring the Echo Points are well-used and valued.

Social Value Impact:

The project is expected to benefit approximately 1,000 people, including:

  • 100 direct participants involved in workshops, launch events and engagement activities.
  • 900 residents, workers and visitors interacting with the Echo Points in their daily lives.

Key impacts include:

  • Enhanced wellbeing, offering moments of calm and reflection in a busy town centre.
  • Improved mental health accessibility, providing a non-clinical, stigma-free way to support emotional wellbeing.
  • Strengthened community connection, through shared experiences and locally meaningful content.
  • Increased civic pride, driven by visible investment in creative, community-led infrastructure.

The Echo Points create a simple yet powerful intervention, encouraging people to pause, listen and reconnect with their surroundings.

Legacy & Future Plans:

The solar-powered design ensure the Echo Points are sustainable and can continue to operate with minimal environmental impact or ongoing costs. Their presence in Bodmin town centre establishes a long-term asset that will benefit both residents and visitors.

The project also creates a platform for future community engagement, with opportunities to expand or refresh sound content over time, keeping the experience relevant and reflective of the evolving community. By demonstrating the value of creative, place-based wellbeing interventions, this initiative sets a strong precedent for similar projects across the region.
